 2 Part-Time Youth Workers

Reports to: Pitone Youth Program Coordinator

Position Details: Positions will start October 1, 2025 until December 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

Overview

In existence since 1965, the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre exists to administer and implement programs to meet the needs of Indigenous people either migrating to cities or living in them, at the same time bridging cultural gaps between the Indigenous and the non-Indigenous community. The Centre also provides leadership and leadership opportunities to the Indigenous community.

Position Overview

The Pitone Youth Program includes the Weaving Wîcihitowin for Learning project, funded by the Alberta Native Friendship Centre Association and the Peyâkoskân Language-Based Podcast, funded by the National Association of Friendship Centres.  The Youth Workers will fulfill duties assisting the Program Coordinator, and planning and facilitating youth programming. The Youth Workers will be responsible for providing support, guidance, and mentorship to young individuals, fostering their personal and social development. This role involves creating and implementing programs and facilitating a safe and inclusive environment for youth to thrive and working fluidly and cooperatively with other Pitone staff. Indigenous ways of knowing emphasize inclusion and belonging, and Pitone provides services for Indigenous and non-Indigenous clients, including family and caregivers of youth.  

 

Requirements: 

  • 3-month current and clear Criminal Record Check and Children & Youth Intervention Check  

  • Class 5 license with reliable transportation 

  • A clean driver’s abstract

    • Strong planning skills, verbal and written communication skills 

  • Strong organizational skills 

  • Ability to work independently or in a team situation. 

  • Human Services experience preferred

  • At minimum 2-years of experience working with youth 

  • Capacity to work with diverse cultural backgrounds 

  • Capacity to work with Elders and Knowledge Holders 

  • Passionate about working with youth and making a positive impact in their lives.  

  • Strong knowledge of the Indigenous ways of knowing

  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekends 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement engaging programs for youth and promote their personal growth, skill development and social interactions.  

  • Advocate the needs and rights of young people within the organization and community. 

  • Work with Elders and Knowledge Holders to enhance cultural youth programming. 

  • Work cooperatively with other Pitone Staff members to prepare for and facilitate youth programming.

  • Work collaboratively with other programs at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. 

  • Build positive relationships with parents, schools, community, and other organizations. 

  • Ensure implementation of policies and procedures of the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. 

  • Respond promptly to situations requiring risk management or intervention and support.  Learn and follow protocol and keep appropriate records.

  • Travel in and around the community when required for programming

  • Participate in required GPFC events

  • Other duties requested by supervisor
